Vasant Panchami also called as Sarasvati Puja in honor of the goddess Saraswati the wife of Bharama Ji. It is the festival that marks the preparation for the arrival of spring and joy. The festival is celebrated by people in the Indian subcontinent in various ways depending on the region. Vasant Panchami is celebrated forty days before seedtime or blooming, because any season’s transition period is 40 days, and after that, the season comes into full bloom. Vasant Panchami is also considered as the festival of the river Saraswati.

In many parts of India, this festival is also known as Saraswati Puja, a day to propitiate Goddess Saraswati. Saraswati pujas are conducted in the houses people decorate their houses as well with yellow, white, and orange flower’s beautifully while the Saraswati temples are decorated and thronged at a large scale by devotees. In southern states of India, it is celebrated as Sri Panchami, as Sri is being one of the names of Goddess Lakshmi wife of Vishnu Ji.

According to ge histories, The Saraswati river is an ancient river in northwest India which dried up in the course of time. In those days, with the advent of spring, the Himalayan glaciers would melt, increasing the flow of the river Saraswati. The mustard plants that grew on the banks of the river used to go into full bloom, with the yellow color of mustard flowers decorating the banks of the river for many miles, making a wonderful sight. It is interesting to note that the color yellow represents knowledge and happiness in the Indian tradition. It is the color of spring.

CELEBRATIONS

 Apart from being a day that is observed as Saraswati Puja, Vasant Panchami is celebrated in different ways in different regions of India.

In Punjab, Vasant Ritu is celebrated as the festival of kites and changes in the atmosphere. In Maharashtra, married couples do visit temples especially wearing yellow clothes on the first Vasant Panchami after their wedding.

This festival is all about togetherness and harmony. In fact, the fun and frolic of the occasion are simply incomplete without good food, sweets, and happiness. The color of Vasant is yellow which symbolizes happiness, loyalty, peace, prosperity, light, energy, and optimism. With the auspicious festivals that fall in India have a significant role along with its food. Every festival is incomplete without its particular food item. And every food has its story behind it along with that festival.  people do wear yellow clothes on this day especially and make traditional delicacies in yellow hues Sweet rice (meethe chawal) with saffron and dry fruits are made in almost every house on this occasion. In Punjab, Maake ki Roti and Sarso Ka Saag are savoured in every house. In Eastern states  Bihar, people celebrate Saraswati Puja by offering delicacies like Kheer, Malpua, and Bundi to the Goddess
