  2. In overall India, 5th September is celebrated as Teachers’ Day as a mark to pay tribute to the contribution made by teachers towards the society. Therefore, 5th September is the birth anniversary of a great teacher Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was a strong believer of education and as well as quite well-known diplomat, scholar, and the President of India. But above all these, a great teacher. 

    Why it is celebrated?

    When some of his students and friends approached him and requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, then he said to them, “instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege, if 5th September is observed as Teachers’ day”. So, then from that day onwards, the 5th of September has been observed as Teachers Day, in overall India. Since, in the year 1965, some of the most prominent students of Late Dr S. Radhakrishnan organized a gathering to pay obeisance to that Great Teacher of repute. In that gathering, in his speech Dr. Radhakrishnan expressed his deep reservation regarding his birth anniversary celebration and emphasized that his birth anniversary should be celebrated as ‘Teachers’ Day’. Hence, by paying homage to all other Great Teachers of India and as well as of Bangladesh. Since from the year 1967, 5th September is celebrated as Teachers’ Day till date. Through a very interesting reading that is: Unforgettable Indian teachers and their legacy: Teachers’ Day Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who was one of the most closest friends of him throughout his journey, had a lot of great things to say about Dr. Radhakrishnan: “He has served his country in many capacities. But above all, he is a great teacher from whom all of us have learnt much and will continue to learn. It is India’s peculiar privilege to have a great philosopher, a great educationist and a great humanist as her President. That in itself shows the kind of men we honour and respect.”

    How Teacher’s Day is celebrated?

    Therefore, Teachers’ Day is celebrated in each and every school, college, and educational institution all over India. Student gives greeting card, flowers and gifts to their respected teachers. In order to pay tribute to their teachers for their service.
