Ashadha Purnima, celebrated on July 21, 2024, holds significant importance in Hinduism and is observed in various ways. This day is also known by other names such as Ashadha Purnima, Guru Purnima, and Vyasa Purnima. It is the most important festival in the Vedic guru-disciple tradition, honoring the gurus. The guru is considered the one who guides us from darkness towards light, hence, on this day, disciples express gratitude towards their gurus and perform worship. On Ashadha Purnima, people engage in the study of Vedic scriptures, meditation, and worship. Many spiritual retreats are organized, and people take vows to follow the teachings of their gurus. In the Sanatan Dharma, Vyasa Jayanti is also celebrated on this day, as it marks the birth of Maharishi Ved Vyasa, revered as the sage and editor of the Vedas in Hinduism. On Ashadha Purnima, people also believe in attaining merit by bathing in rivers, lakes, or seas, as it is believed to cleanse one of sins. Numerous religious ceremonies take place where people immerse themselves in devotional singing, dancing, and discourses. In Hinduism, Ashadha Purnima holds great significance. It is also known as Kajari Purnima. This Purnima is dedicated to Lord Ashtabhairava, who is one of the forms of Lord Shiva. On this day, people perform various rituals and offer donations. Especially, bathing in the river Ganga, performing worship, and giving alms hold immense importance. The worship on this day includes special prayers and Aarti dedicated to Lord Shiva. In some places, this day is also significant for businesses. It marks the time for harvesting seeds sown by farmers. Farmers take special care of their crops on this day and pray to the gods for their special blessings.

Ashadha Purnima Puja Procedure:

  1. Wake up during the Brahma Muhurta (auspicious time before dawn) and cleanse yourself by bathing and wearing clean clothes.
  2. Prepare the puja altar by arranging all the necessary items such as Ganga water, clay, sandalwood paste, kumkum, rice grains, incense, lamps, naivedya (offerings), flowers, bilva leaves, sugar, fruits, coconut, metal kalash, a pot, and other utensils.
  3. Then, establish the Shiva Linga on the puja altar and perform Abhishek (ritualistic bathing) with Ganga water.
  4. Worship the Shiva Linga with Ganga water, incense, lamp, sandalwood paste, kumkum, rice grains, bilva leaves, flowers, naivedya, fruits, sugar, and coconut.
  5. Afterward, chant mantras and perform Aarti (ritual of waving lamps) for Lord Shiva.
  6. If possible, observe fasting on this day and prepare traditional meals for Lord Shiva.
  7. Donating on Ashadha Purnima holds special significance, especially offering water is considered highly auspicious.
  8. Along with worshiping and offering prayers to Lord Shiva, following religious rituals is also considered auspicious on Ashadha Purnima.
