Govardhan Pooja – 15 November 2020

Govardhan Puja is celebrated on the next day of Deepawali i.e. Pratipada of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. This festival is also known by the name of Annakoot. This festival has mythological significance. In this festival, a direct connection between nature and man is established. Godhan or cow mother is worshiped in this festival. It has been said in the scriptures that the cow is as pure as the pure water of the Ganges. Usually this festival often falls on the next day of Deepawali, but sometimes there is a difference of one day between the festivals of Deepawali and Govardhan Puja.

Govardhan Puja Vidhi

In this festival, the worshipers of Hinduism worship God by making cow’s idol in the courtyard of the house and worship them. After this, to appease Lord Giriraj, who is considered to be the deity of Braj, he offers food to Annakoot. The animals of cow and bull are bathed and worshiped with flower garlands, incense, sandalwood etc. Aarti is offered to the cows by offering them sweets and performing pradakshina. The Pratikpada of Kartik Shukla Paksha is offered as a bhog to God and raw-cooked food, fruits, flowers, various types of foods called Chhappan Bhoga. Then all the materials are distributed to your family and friends and the offerings are received.

Importance of Govardhan Puja

It is said that Lord Krishna’s purpose behind breaking Indra’s ego was to tell the Braj people the importance of cow wealth and the environment. So that they protect them. Even today, cow mother has special importance in our life and milk obtained by cow has a very important place in our life.

Although today Govardhan Parvat is in the form of a small hill in Braj, but he is called the king of the mountains. Govardhan receives such a noun because it is the only permanent and stable remnant of Lord Krishna’s time. While the Yamuna river of that period kept changing its stream from time to time, Govardhan existed in its original place in an inhospitable form. Govardhan is also considered as the form of Lord Krishna and he is worshiped in this form. In the Garg Samhita, it is said that the importance of Govardhan is said – Govardhan is the king of mountains and dear to Hari. Like this, there is no other shrine in earth and heaven.
