Mythological story of Hariyali Amavasya:-
According to a famous mythological story of Hariyali Amavasya, once upon a time a king used to fast and worship on the day of Hariyali Amavasya for the welfare of his subjects. One year there was a terrible famine in the kingdom, due to which the people were extremely suffering. The king prayed to the gods but no solution was found. Then a sage advised the king to plant trees and worship Lord Shiva-Parvati on Hariyali Amavasya.
The king followed the sage’s advice and got trees planted in the entire kingdom on the day of Hariyali Amavasya and worshiped Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati ritually. After worshiping and planting trees, the kingdom soon received rain due to which greenery returned. Crops started flourishing and the life of the people became happy. After this incident, Hariyali Amavasya started being given special importance.
According to another story, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati came to earth on the new moon day of Shravan month and gave the message of environmental protection. They told their devotees the importance of tree plantation and protecting nature. This story of Hariyali Amavasya explains to us the importance of environmental protection and religious faith. The importance of tree plantation and worship on this day is not only related to religious faith but also reflects our responsibilities towards nature and environment. Hariyali Amavasya Puja Vidhi:-
- Get up early in the morning, take a bath and wear clean clothes.
- Clean the place of worship in the house thoroughly and sprinkle Ganga water there.
- Install the idol or picture of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati.
- Sit on the seat facing the east.
- Now light a lamp in front of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati.
- Meditate on Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and invoke them and consecrate them.
- After that, anoint the Shivling with Gangajal, milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar, apart from this, after anointing with Panchamrit, bathe it with pure water.
- Offer sandalwood, roli, belpatra and dhatura on the Shivling and put a garland of flowers on it.
- Offer fruits, sweets and Panchamrit to the Lord, after that light incense and lamps.
- After chanting the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya”, also chant other mantras of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati.
- After the puja, distribute the bhog as prasad.
- After the puja, plant trees for environmental protection and take a pledge to take care of them.
