Varalakshmi Vrat is a major festival of Hinduism which is celebrated by women to attain the grace and prosperity of Goddess Lakshmi. This fast is especially famous in North India but it is celebrated with enthusiasm and devotion in different regions. This fast is especially done to attain wealth, property, prosperity and good fortune. Varalakshmi Vrat is organized on the Dwadashi date of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month, which people know as Lakshmi Dwadashi or Varalakshmi Vrat. On this day, women perform special worship of Goddess Lakshmi to attain prosperity and good fortune. On the day of Varalakshmi Vrat, women take bath in the morning and gather with the family to prepare for worship. In the puja, women tie the links of wealth and pleasant bonds and offer special prayers to please Goddess Lakshmi. After the puja, food is eaten according to the rules of the fast and prasad is given to other women as a gift. Varalakshmi Vrat is an important part of Indian culture which offers thanks for the attainment of prosperity, good fortune and happiness. This festival is not only of religious importance but it also strengthens the mutual relations of the family and seeks the blessings of prosperity.

Importance of Varalakshmi Vrat:-

Every kind of fast is considered to be of great importance in Hinduism. This fast is considered to be a medium to get the grace and blessings of the deities. Mother Varalakshmi is considered to be the incarnation of Mahalakshmi. By observing this fast, you can please Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth and economic prosperity, and get her blessings. This fast is considered to be especially important in the southern states of India and Maharashtra. Women observe this fast with special devotion and dedication. Keeping this fast together with both husband and wife has more effect of this fast. This strengthens the financial condition of the house and especially the grace and blessings of Mother Lakshmi are received. Varalakshmi Vrat is observed on Friday of Shravan month and it occurs a few days before Rakhi and Shravan Purnima.

Story of Varalakshmi Vrat:-

According to the mythological story, there used to be a city named Kundi in the kingdom of Magadha. A woman named Charumati lived in that city. Charumati was a family woman who used to fulfill the responsibilities of her in-laws and husband completely, apart from this she was an ardent devotee of Goddess Lakshmi and used to worship her with full rituals. One night, Goddess Lakshmi came in Charumati’s dream and told her to keep Varalakshmi Vrat on the Friday before the full moon of Shravan month. On Friday, as per the instructions of Goddess Lakshmi, Charumati worshipped Goddess Lakshmi regularly. As soon as Charumati’s worship was completed and she was doing parikrama of the Kalash, gold ornaments started adorning her body. With this, Charumati’s house was filled with wealth and grains. Charumati told the method of this fast to other women of the city and from that day onwards all the women of the city started keeping Varalakshmi fast, due to which all their financial problems ended.

Method of worship of Varalakshmi Vrat:-

On the day of Varalakshmi Vrat, you should wake up in the fourth quarter and start the day by meditating on Maa Lakshmi.
Wake up in Brahma Muhurta and clean the house and take a bath.
Sprinkle Gangajal in the house. If Gangajal is not available, then use pure and fresh water.
For worship, arrange for the idol of Varalakshmi ji, flower garland, kumkum, turmeric, sandalwood powder, vibhuti, mirror, comb, mango leaf, flower, betel leaf, panchamrit, curd, banana, milk, water, incense sticks, moli, incense, camphor, prasad, oil, lamp, Akshat.
After that take a pledge to fast for Maa Varalakshmi.
Dress Maa Varalakshmi in new clothes and decorate her with jewelry and kumkum.
Place the idol of Maa Lakshmi along with the idol of Ganesh Ji on a wooden board in the east direction and spread a little vermilion at the place of worship.
Fill a Kalash with water and place it on the rice and after that apply sandalwood all around the Kalash.
Finally, complete the worship by performing the Aarti of Maa Varalakshmi.
