Basant Panchami, or Saraswati Puja, is a Hindu festival held to honor the Goddess Saraswati. The spring
festival is observed on the fifth day of the month of Magh. Holi takes place 40 days later than the
holiday of Basant Panchami. The Vasant Utsava on Panchami is celebrated forty days before Spring since
change from season to season requires forty days.
Goddess Saraswati is the root of knowledge. Basant Panchami also signals the beginning of the Spring
season in India. Yellow flowers are synonymous with the festival, and their fields mimic broad regions of
yellow flowers in full bloom. People wear yellow-colored clothing and consume food that has yellow dye
in it (like khichdi).
Vasant Panchami is a festival that marks the beginning of spring, celebrated by people in different ways
depending on the area in the Indian subcontinent. In India, the festival is held mainly in the northern
states of Punjab and Bihar. People carry jasmine garlands on the day of the festival.

This year’s Basant Panchami times are 6:45 am to 12:35 pm.
While a day is deemed auspicious, the best period for the puja is in the afternoon.
