Why do we celebrate father’s day

The modern Father’s Day in the United States was influenced by the establishment of Mother’s Day. Anna Jarvis is credited with founding Mother’s Day in 1908 as a way to honor mothers and motherhood. The success of Mother’s Day inspired efforts to establish a similar day to celebrate fathers.

The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910. However, it took several decades for Father’s Day to gain widespread recognition and acceptance. Efforts to establish Father’s Day as a national holiday faced resistance and skepticism.

Despite early opposition, the idea of Father’s Day gradually gained momentum. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. It was later signed into law as a permanent national holiday by President Richard Nixon in 1972.

Hinduism places great emphasis on ancestor worship and the veneration of forefathers. Fathers are revered as ancestors after their passing, and it is believed that offering prayers, performing rituals, and observing ceremonies in their honor can bring blessings and spiritual merit to the family.

In Hindu mythology and scriptures, divine figures such as Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma are often depicted as father figures, symbolizing the nurturing, protective, and benevolent aspects of the divine. The relationship between devotees and these deities mirrors the bond between a child and their father, characterized by love, reverence, and devotion.
