The Amavasya (new moon) in the Hindu month of Ashadh falls on the last day of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon). Among the twelve Amavasyas that occur in a year, each holds different significance. The Amavasya falling in the Ashadh month of the Hindu calendar is known as Darsha Amavasya or Ashadha Amavasya. On this day, taking a holy dip in a sacred river and offering donations according to one’s capability are believed to bestow auspicious results. Additionally, performing tarpan (offerings) and pind daan (ritual of offering food to ancestors) for one’s forefathers is considered highly auspicious. Ashadha Amavasya is also known as Halharini Amavasya.
The Significance of Ashadha Amavasya:
Ashadha Amavasya holds immense significance in Hinduism. This fast is considered highly appropriate for protecting individuals from all kinds of negative energies and evil eyes. This Amavasya is also believed to be highly fruitful in reducing the influence of malevolent forces. Furthermore, it holds great importance in appeasing the souls of ancestors. According to belief, observing fasts on this day fulfills all the desires of the devotee and brings peace and prosperity in their life. The fasting, worship, and donations made on this Amavasya date help alleviate the doshas (malefic influences) present in the individual’s birth chart, such as pitru dosha and shani dosha, thereby providing liberation from them.
