  2. Independence Day is annually celebrated on 15 August, as a national holiday in India. Its commemorating the nation’s independence from the United Kingdom on 15 August 1947. It’s the day when the Parliament of UK passed the Indian Independence Act in 1947 thus, by transferring the legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly. While India attained full independence by following the Independence Movement noted for mainly nonviolent, resistance, and civil disobedience. But Independence coincided with the partition of India, thus by which the British India was further divided along with religious lines into the Dominions of India and Pakistan. Though the partition was accompanied by various violent riots and mass casualties, and also the displacement of nearly about15 million people due to religious violence. Therefore, On 15 August 1947, the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. Since, from that day, on each subsequent Independence Day, the incumbent Prime Minister of India customarily raises the flag at Red Fort and gives an address to the nation. Although the entire event is broadcast by Doordarshan, India’s national broadcaster, and usually begins with the shehnai music given by Ustad Bismillah Khan.How it is celebrated?

    Independence Day is observed throughout India through conducting flag hoisting ceremonies, parades and then ended by cultural events. It is a national holiday and is observed in all Indian states and union territories. While on the eve of Independence Day, the President of India delivers the “Address to the Nation”. On the other side on the15 August, the Prime Minister hoists the Indian National flag on the ramparts of the historical Monnument of Red Fort in Delhi. Twenty-one-gun shots are fired in honor of the solemn occasion. Therefore, in his speech, the Prime Minister highlights the all-important past year’s achievements, highlights important issues and calls for further development. Then at last he pays tribute to the leaders of the Indian independence movement. Then to bid the ceremony Indian national anthem, “Jana Gana Mana”, is sung.
