Among the 12 significant Sankrantis that occur annually in Hinduism, Kark Sankranti holds special importance. Every year, the Sun enters different zodiac signs, influencing those signs. Kark Sankranti, also known as the transition during the month of Sawan, marks the Sun’s entry from Gemini to Cancer zodiac sign. It’s worth mentioning that in Hinduism, performing the Sun God’s worship and rituals on the day of Sankranti is highly auspicious. Through the proper rituals and worship conducted on Kark Sankranti, all the doshas (flaws) of an individual are believed to be eliminated, and favorable results from the celestial bodies and constellations in the solar system are obtained.

Significance of Kark Sankranti:

Performing special worship of the Sun God on the day of Kark Sankranti holds great significance. It is believed that performing puja and recitations on Kark Sankranti helps in the eradication of all diseases, and all afflictions and faults are resolved quickly. As the Sun God holds the foremost position among the five deities, worshiping the Sun God on Kark Sankranti enhances the intellect of the worshiper and brings prosperity, fame, and respect in life. Kark Sankranti marks the beginning of the monsoon season, and the intensity of the Sun’s heat reduces significantly on Earth from this day onwards. It is said that with the Sun’s entry into the zodiac sign of Cancer, the night of the gods also begins. Therefore, during this time, all demonic forces become active, and by chanting Sun mantras diligently during the worship, all negative energies are dispelled.

On Kark Sankranti, one should definitely chant the Aditya Hridaya Stotra, Surya Chalisa, and Sun mantras. Additionally, taking a holy dip in sacred rivers and performing charity ensures that one never faces any scarcity in life. Offering donations in the name of ancestors also brings blessings from them, ensuring perpetual happiness and prosperity in the family.

Significance of Surya’s Dakshinayan on Kark Sankranti:

Kark Sankranti marks the end of the Uttarayan period for the Sun. From this day onwards, the Sun transitions into its Dakshinayan phase for six months until Makar Sankranti. During the period of Surya’s Dakshinayan, nights become longer, and days become shorter. The Sun moves with an inclination towards the south during its Dakshinayan period. The Sun traverses through the zodiac signs of Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius during its southward journey. Auspicious events like marriages, tonsures, thread ceremonies, and housewarming ceremonies are considered inauspicious during the period of Surya’s Dakshinayan. Undertaking any auspicious activities during this time does not yield favorable results.

Legend of Kark Sankranti:

According to the legend of Kark Sankranti, once while overseeing the affairs of the universe, Lord Vishnu became exhausted. Seeing this, Goddess Lakshmi suggested that Lord Vishnu should entrust the responsibility of the universe to Lord Shiva for some time and take a rest. Taking Goddess Lakshmi’s words into consideration, Lord Vishnu handed over all his responsibilities to Lord Shiva and went to rest for four months. After four months, when Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu exchanged their responsibilities, it became a tradition to celebrate the festival of Ekadashi on the day Lord Vishnu returned from his rest, which is also known as Devuthani Ekadashi. It is believed that Lord Vishnu’s return marks the beginning of all auspicious activities.

In reality, gold is considered symbolic of the gods. It is said that on this day, along with Lord Vishnu, the Sun and other deities also go into a state of rest. During this time, as Lord Shiva takes over the responsibilities of the entire universe, the significance of worshipping Lord Shiva increases significantly during the month of Shravan, along with the commencement of all festivals.
