Margashirsha Amavasya is a day of ardent devotion and reverence. On this day, devotees pay their respect to the ancestors apart from worshipping Lord Krishna. SIGNIFICANCE OF MARGASHIRSHA AMAVASYA
Lord Krishna himself has said in ‘Gita’- “I am Marghasheesh month”. In the era of Satyuga, God started the year on the first date of the month of Margashirsha. Therefore, on the day of Margashirsha Amavasya, the special significance of taking bath in holy rivers has been initiated.
Margashirsha Amavasya is also known by another name, ‘Agahan Amavasya’. Religiously, the significance of this Amavasya is considered equally fruitful as the Kartik Amavasya.
Worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on this sacred day with proper sacred rituals is considered auspicious, just like she has been worshipped on the festival- ‘Deepawali’. This day is also very favorable and propitious for bathing on the bank of the River Ganges. The fast of Margashirsha Amavasya in the year 2020 is on Monday, 14 December. Due to Amavasya, various sacred ceremonies such as- donating needful items to poor and other religious activities are also being done which are supposed to be a major significance in Hindu religion.
On the day of Margashirsha Amavasya, the spiritual worship of the ancestors is exclusively done and thus this day is reckoned as the day of praising the ancestors and forefathers.
